FAQs

Set The Hook Guide Service
  • What all is provided in your guide trips at Set The Hook Guide Service?

We supply all the necessary equipment for your day on the water, including rods, tackle, bait, and life jackets. You'll also have an experienced fishing guide accompanying you on Lake Minnetonka.
  • What do we need to bring on our trip?

Please bring a valid MN fishing license, sunglasses, sunscreen, and any food or beverages you'd like. We also recommend dressing appropriately for the weather conditions expected that day.
  • What fish will we catch?

The species available vary by season due to changing fish behavior. From May through November, our charters primarily catch Largemouth Bass and Northern Pike, with occasional Walleye and Musky. In April and early May, we focus on Sunfish and Crappies, as this is the optimal time to target them before warmer weather shifts fish activity.
  • How many places do we fish?

We typically visit 3-6 different fishing locations during each trip. In warmer months, we're able to cover more spots by reading conditions and navigating efficiently. Our Lake Minnetonka charters are designed to maximize your chances of catching fish.
  • How deep will we fish?

Lake Minnetonka averages about 30 feet in depth, though it reaches over 100 feet at its deepest points. We generally fish in shallower water but will adjust based on seasonal patterns and current conditions. The lake spans approximately 15,000 acres, making it the 9th largest lake in Minnesota, with varied depths throughout.
  • What types of bait will we use?

Our bait selection depends on the season and target species. We use either live bait or soft plastics, with live bait typically being most effective for our fishing methods. During the open water season, we primarily use different varieties of minnows. In winter, we also incorporate wax worms. Ultimately, we let the fish dictate what works best each day.
  • What fish species do you usually target?

Lake Minnetonka supports diverse species including Bass, Northern Pike, Muskie, Walleye, Sunfish (bluegills), and Crappies. Our guides prioritize maximizing action based on the time of day. Daytime trips typically yield more Bass, Pike, and Sunfish, while evening trips are ideal for Walleye and Crappies. Target species also vary depending on the season and your preferences.
